Stiff Neck -causes, Symptoms, Treatment

Causes of Stiff Neck
Stiff necks can be annoying, but they might also be a sign of a serious infection, tumor or other problem that does not originate in the neck.Meningitis is an infection in the membrane and fluid of the brain that could (if it is the bacterial kind) require medical attention ASAP.

Causes of a Stiff Neck
Not all stiff necks are the same. While most of the time a stiff neck is caused by whiplash, ergonomics, wear and tear, or just sleeping in a funny position, there are those instances where it can be the sign of something systemic.
A common cause of neck pain is muscle strain or tension. Usually, everyday activities are to blame. Such activities include bending over a desk for hours, having poor posture while watching TV or reading, placing your computer monitor too high or too low.Disk disorders. As you age, the cushioning disks between your vertebrae become dry and stiff, narrowing the spaces in your spinal column where the nerves come out. The disks in your neck also can herniate.

Symptoms of Stiff Neck
Oral cavity. A white or red patch on the gums, tongue, or lining of the mouth; a swelling of the jaw that causes dentures to fit poorly or become uncomfortable; and unusual bleeding or pain in the mouth.Nasal cavity and sinuses. Sinuses that are blocked and do not clear, chronic sinus infections that do not respond to treatment with antibiotics, bleeding through the nose, frequent headaches, swelling or other trouble with the eyes, pain in the upper teeth, or problems with dentures.
Upper abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting (which may indicate pancreatitis)Lower abdominal pain in women (may indicate swelling of the ovaries, which is rare)
Other possible causes for stiff neck—like influenza, polio and meningitis—are far more serious. These conditions, however, announce themselves with other unpleasant symptoms, including nausea, headache and swollen glands.

How is it treated
Acute -sudden onset of pain or severe pain - severe neck and/or arm pain may require use of a collar and/or bed rest for first 24 hours and use of ice for first 72 hours. This usually follows trauma, a car accident, a fall or sharp pain/popping felt in the neck. SELF CARE Additional treatment will be determined by severity of the problem.
Antiviral medications may be prescribed for herpes encephalitis or other severe viral infections. Antibiotics may be prescribed for bacterial infections. Anticonvulsants are used to prevent or treat seizures. Corticosteroids are used to reduce brain swelling and inflammation.
Our health-care provider will advise you on treatment options. Acyclovir, famcyclovir, or val acyclovir (medicines that work against herpes viruses) are recommended for persons who are more likely to develop serious disease, including persons with chronic skin or lung disease, otherwise healthy individuals 13 years of age or older, and persons receiving steroid therapy.
A regular painkiller - taking it regularly by the clock not just when it seems to hurt most. If you aren't allergic to aspirin then one of the more modern aspirin-like drugs, like nurofen, taken three times a day for three or four days.In The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook, nationally certified massage therapist Clair Davies simplifies Travell and Simons’s extensive research into myofascial pain and makes it accessible to the layman.

Easy Makeup Tips for Women Over 40

Everyone turns over 40 years old sooner or later but why must you look that way?
Here are a few great makeup tips for those over 40 but would never admit it.
As with all makeup you need to start with great skin. Before you start any makeup application you need to cleanse then moisturize your face. Make sure you moisturize with creams and serums that are rich with retinols, antioxidants and peptides to help wage war on those all tell all fine lines.
Also before applying foundation use a silicone rich primer to help create a smoother finish. Makeup for those over 40 means we may need to start wearing foundation to help over up some small problems that have turn up. There are some who skin will never need to foundation but some will. Sun spots are common for those over 40 and a little concealer with foundation will help with that.

If ruddiness (redness) is a problem, try this:
Start by applying a sheer foundation and apply more light layers of foundation over the areas that need more coverage, then gradually build it up till you have full coverage.
You will find that a yellow based foundation works best, but do try to match it to your own personal skin tone.
Test on your jaw line in natural light if possible. Don't test it on the back of your hand when trying out foundations, the skin tone won't match and you will find that the color of foundation will be not quite right. If possible look at your skin in a natural lighting to see if the foundation you are thinking of buying looks correctly.

Playing up your eyes:
Eye shadows that you wore when you were in your 30's just may not be right now. Yet someone had come up with a silly rule that once you hit 40 its time to put away all your favorite vivid greens, purples, pinks eye shadows. Rules are not the same any longer, just change a little. All you need to do is stay away from any eye shadows that are iridescent because they will accentuate any fine lines that you may have.

Still, feel the need to wear one of your favorite color of eye shadow that's a bit wild?
Do this which is a up date for those who wear makeup over 40.
Start with your makeup primer, then apply a neutral color, your browns, beiges, bone then layer over that your favorite I'm not over 40 eye shadow. Best for parties but why not have fun?
Don't forget your eyeliner either. Just apply along your lash line then smudge it to help give your lashes a fuller look. Be careful with the color of eyeliner you choose, black may be too harsh for you now. Also don't forget to curl your lashes before applying your mascara as a way to open up your eyes and if you want really long full eye lashes look into Magic Lash Eyelash Enhancer.
Just because you have turned over 40 means your makeup doesn't need to change, just change a little. Tone down some colors, you may want to start wearing foundation if you didn't already do so. Start using a cream blush instead of a dry blush, simple things such as that. Drink lots of water and go back to taking on the world at on your terms.

Kiwi Fruit Facts and Healing Properties

Kiwi Fruit History
The Kiwi Fruit originates in China and was taken to New Zealand by Chinese missionaries to start growing trials. It was originally known as the Chinese gooseberry and the New Zealanders then named it the Kiwi Fruit. It is also known as the Hayward Kiwi. In the 1970's, commercial cultivation began and the growing trials made it possible for growing kiwi fruit in other countries.
Growing Kiwi Fruit
It's a vigorous climber with separate male and female plants needed to produce the luscious fruit. Kiwi fruit require full sun for growing and thrive in richly composted, deeply dug and well watered soils. Ideally, male and female plants are planted together about 1meter apart on sturdy frames or arches or wire rows. Kiwi plants require light pruning and protection from frost. In very cold areas, kiwi plants will not survive.
Kiwi Fruit Nutrition
The Kiwi Fruit is rich in vitamins C, E and A. It contains dietary fibre, potassium, phosphorous, magnesium and copper. It has a remarkable ability to remove excess sodium from the body which is good for the average person who eats too much salt. The Chinese believe that it's the tiny black seeds that perform this amazing feat. The Kiwi fruit is also rich in antioxidants ad digestive enzymes. Kiwi fruit should be eaten as soon as possible after being cut as these enzymes make the fruit go soggy.
Health Benefits
Kiwi fruit is said to promote respiratory health and ease wheezing and night coughing. A fruit salad of sliced kiwi fruit with a little cinnamon powder sprinkled over and a dribble of honey before bedtime is comforting and helpful. An ancient Chinese cure for shortness of breath and coughing spasms is syrup made of fresh kiwi fruit with honey and finely crushed aniseed.
For a Kiwi Health Booster Breakfast, try the following recipe:
Peel 4 ripe kiwi fruits. Slice them and sprinkle with sesame seeds then dribble over a little raw honey. Sprinkle with a ½ teaspoon of cinnamon powder, 1 teaspoon of freshly grated ginger and 2 teaspoons of finely chopped mint. Top with plain yogurt.

Eight Ways to Help You Keep Healthy Beautiful Nails

Although nails may seem to be unimportant growths in the body, these hard little things can actually determine the state of your health. Your fingernails and toenails can even reflect your personality and how much you value hygiene and cleanliness. But if you want to make your nails strong and beautiful, using strengthening products available in the market may not be the best thing to do. Below are some tips you can do to strengthen your nails and keep them healthy and beautiful.
1. Know That Water Is Bad For Your Nails
It is important for you to know that water is the number one nemesis of your nails. Thus, it would be better if you do not soak your nails in water for a long time. However, if you think that you will be doing activities that will require your nails to get soaked in water for a long time; you can wear rubber gloves or shoes to protect the nails in your hands and feet. If you cannot do that, be sure to eat healthy foods that are helpful in keeping your nails stronger.
2. Eat Well For Stronger Nails
Proteins are important in keeping your nails hard and strong. If you are vegetarian, just look for other sources of protein aside from meat and poultry. Sulfur is also helpful in keeping them beautiful and strong. Other types of food that you may want to include in your diet to boost the health of your nails are garlic, leafy greens and fruits.
3. Nails Should Not Be Used As Tools
Many think that nails are created to help people remove stickers from surfaces, get rid of stubborn grease and food particles in pots and pans, or open letters and cans. However, it is important to note that your nails are not meant to be used as tools. If you break or chip your nails, you will be more susceptible to diseases and infections, such as warts and nail fungus.
4. Keep An Emery Board At Hand At All Times
It may be a wise idea to keep an emery board available in areas where you spend a lot of time working. This way, you can easily smoothen nails when you see chips and cracks to prevent further damage. As mentioned earlier, even small breaks and cuts in your nails and skin can make you prone to several nail problems and conditions.
5. Never Bite Your Nails
Aside from being unsanitary, biting your nails is not a very good habit to keep. Will you trust a person who is chewing on his or her nails in front of you? No. Besides, nail biting can make nails ugly, uneven and too short.
6. Make Sure That Your Nails Are Short
Ideally, nails should be trimmed and cut regularly so their length is just a few centimeters longer than the base of your fingers. Keeping nails short can make it easier for you to clean and maintain them. If ever you plan to keep your nails long, make sure that you keep them clean regularly and strengthen them with oils and lotions whenever you can.
7. Always Wear Rubber Gloves
It would be a great idea to wear gloves every time you handle water, chemicals and cleaning products. The ingredients in soaps and other cleaning materials can be harmful not only to your nails, but also to your hands.
8. Medicate At First Sign Of Infection
Once you see that your nails may be suffering from infection like nail fungus, it would be ideal to use medication immediately. Most common nail problems spread to your other nails easily if not quickly eliminated. An all-natural anti-fungal system that is helpful in fighting nail fungus is Somasin.

Cure for Skin Rashes and Itching

Common rashes are often called dermatitis, meaning inflammation of the skin; they involve changes in the color or texture of the skin including skin redness or inflammation. Common rashes are also known as skin lesions, Rubor and Erythema.
Skin reactions are more common today due to many new fabrics in use. Some of the body rashes affect the whole body (termed as a generalized), where as others appear on discrete areas of the skin. Skin rashes can be self limiting or require medications. Babies often develop skin rashes because of irritation from the coloring materials in these fabrics. Skin or the body rash is a common term that describes a group of special spots, an area of inflammation or altered color or texture of the skin. Skin rashes might be associated with various other symptoms such as itching, tingling, burning, pain, inflammation and sometimes, surprisingly with no discomfort at all. Belladonna remedy is useful for conditions with sudden onset that are hot, bright red, and throbbing. Rash may be accompanied by fever.

Oatmeal bath is preferred

Applying olive oil to the rash could provide some relief.

Aloe Vera gel, cod liver oil and Vitamin E oil are also helpful in combating body rash.

Using baking powder on the affected area is another suggestion to deal with body and back rash.

Aloe Vera: Widely known for treating burns and sunburns, aloe vera also helps in healing wounds and minor skin irritations such as itchiness and rashes. This plant produces anti inflammatory, anti bacterial, and anti fungal properties. It also contains folic acid, zinc, and vitamins C and E.
Chamomile Essential Oil: Has anti inflammatory (anti-microbial) properties that soothes and eliminates an itchy skin rash and irritations. Chamomile is also used in treating eczema, psoriasis, and sunburn. Please be aware, people who are normally allergic to grass and ragweed may acquire an allergic reaction to chamomile.
Witch hazel: Acts as an astringent that relieves itching and minor skin inflammation. Also used for treating sunburns. For maximum benefit, use fresh witch hazel bark. Simmer one ounce of the bark with one pint of water and leave for ten minutes. Strain and cool. Apply with a clean cloth and leave it on for about thirty minutes.
There are natural alternatives to cortisone cream treatment for rashes. For example Eczema is often treated with cortisone cream to combat the itching. There is, unfortunately, no known cure for Eczema, but natural medicines can help reduce the symptoms of Eczema without the harmful side effects associated with cortisones and other pharmaceutical medications.
There are many treatment of skin Rashes. Cortisone is often used to decrease local inflammation, swelling, burning and itching often associated with common rashes. Many natural remedy creams that provide instant and long-term relief rashes. The best home remedy for body rashes is to apply olive oil on the rash affected area. Belladonna remedy is useful for conditions with sudden onset that are hot, bright red, and throbbing. Rash may be accompanied by fever. Ledum palustre remedy is indicated for a puffy and swollen rash. Both the swelling and the itching are relieved by cold applications.
Itch relief is important, because scratching can itself irritate the skin and lead to more itching, creating an itching-scratching-itching cycle. Fingernails should be kept short to minimize abrasions from scratching. Applying eucalyptus oil on the skin can be helpful or take a cotton ball or Q-Tip and apply Tea Tree Oil full strength to area that is itching.

Wonder Food For Women!

The humble soybean boasts some extraordinary benefits. This nutritional powerhouse has stayed under wraps for too long. Apart from being the only vegetable protein with all 20 amino acids essential for our health and well being, the humble soybean has many other virtues...including an excellent foundation for fast, safe weight loss program.
According to Dr David Heber in "The LA Shape Diet", women who are on a weight loss program need about 100 grams of protein per day to fight against hunger and to build their best personal lean muscle shape whilst still losing weight. Without the appropriate level of protein in a low calorie diet, people and women in particular, risk losing 1 pound of muscle for every 4 pounds of weight lost! This potential muscle loss can be very dangerous as it can cause a weakening of the heart and other vital organs.
Dr Heber recommends soy-protein shakes or soy-protein fruit smoothies as a safe and healthy way to achieve fast and permanent weight loss. Apart from some absolutely wonderful health advantages, soy is a safe protein source - without the unwanted cholesterol and saturated fats that accompany animal protein sources. Soy will support and does not sabotage a low calorie weight loss program.
Read on to discover some other wonderful health benefits of this incredible this food source.
1. Soy contains health enhancing isoflavones. Isoflavones are compounds found only in plants which have strong antioxidant properties. These compounds repair, and help prevent damage to cells caused by pollution, sunlight, and normal body processes. Free radicals can easily cause harm to the immune system, whose cells divide often. They may also be responsible for some of the changes of aging.
2. Reduce risk of heart disease. Soy's protein and isoflavones lower LDL cholesterol and decrease blood clotting, which reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke. In one study, people who drank a "milk shake" containing 25g of soy protein for nine weeks experienced, on average, a 5% reduction in LDL cholesterol. And people with the highest LDL levels experienced a 11% drop. (For each 10% to 15% drop in the LDL level, the risk of a heart attack decreases 20% to 25%).
3. Protection against cancer. Soy's soluble fiber protects the body from many digestive related cancers, such as colon and rectal cancer. While its isoflavones may protect the body from many hormone related cancers, like breast, endometrial (uterine) and prostate cancer. Isoflavones act against cancer cells in a way similar to many common cancer-treating drugs.
4. Counter the effects of endometriosis. The isoflavones in soy products may help to offset the action of the body's natural estrogen, which is often responsible for instigating the monthly pain, heavy bleeding and other symptoms of endometriosis.
5. Protect against prostate problems. Eating soy products may protect against enlargement of the male prostate gland. The size of the prostate gland tends to increase with age, causing various types of urinary difficulties, including frequent nighttime awakenings.
6. Guard against osteoporosis. Soy's protein enhances the body's ability to retain and better absorb calcium in the bones, while its isoflavones slow bone loss and inhibit bone breakdown, which helps prevent osteoporosis. There is evidence to suggest that isoflavones may also assist in creating new bone.
7. Control symptoms of menopause and perimenopause. Soy's isoflavones help the body regulate estrogen when this hormone is declining or fluctuating, which helps alleviate many menopausal and PMS symptoms. Research has shown that soy isoflavones can reduce menopausal hot flushes in women.
8. Help control diabetic conditions and kidney disease. Soy's protein and soluble fiber help regulate glucose levels and kidney filtration, which helps control diabetic conditions and kidney disease.
What an incredible little bean! With such profound health benefits how can you overlook this wonderful food source? If you haven't yet noticed, gone are the days when the only way soy products came were in strange tasting meat substitutes. You can now access a wide range of soy products and use soy in a variety of ways to suit any taste palate.

How to Know If You Have Brain Cancer

The most likely reason for asking about how to know if you have brain cancer is that the person or a loved one has experienced some symptoms that are suspected could (but hopefully not) be caused by brain cancer. There are many related questions that follow and this series is a result of research into the various aspects of the issue of brain cancer, including treatments and outcomes.
Research shows that there are areas of agreement as well as areas of disagreement amongst those that provide care and advice. Additionally, there are conflicting reports from brain cancer patients and family members of patients as to the value and effectiveness of both methods of diagnosis as well as treatment choices.
The most common symptoms are:
o headaches,
o weakness,
o nausea,
o clumsiness,
o difficulty walking,
o changes in speech,
o vision or hearing difficulties,
o twitching or seizures, and
o numbness or tingling in the arms or legs.
None of the symptoms are unique to brain cancer so they must be taken as indicators only. Also, symptom onset can be quite gradual and is often overlooked.
It is quite common for different medical organizations or practitioners to provide differing lists of the most common brain cancer symptoms. This appears, in part, to be due to the various parts of the brain that could be cancerous and thereby affecting the different parts of the body that are associated with the affected part of the brain.
The following are regarded as less common but possible symptoms:
o altered mental status,
o changes in concentration,
o impaired judgment, memory, attention, or alertness,
o gradual changes in intellectual or emotional capacity,
o impaired sense of smell,
o paralysis of one side of the face or body,
o drooping eyelid or crossed eyes,
o prolonged drowsiness,
o swelling,
o discontinuation of menstruation,
o excess secretion of milk in women, and
o impotence in men.
All research sources were quick to point out that symptoms are not a sure sign of cancer. When asking how to know if you have brain cancer it is important to know that other conditions could also cause these symptoms.
Addition articles in the series soon to be released include statistics, diagnostic choices, treatment choices, what questions should you ask your doctor, is it possible for a cancer patient to ever be cancer free, and patient testimonials (including miracle results).

Foot Pain Relief At Last!

"As an arthritis specialist, one area that I see people complain about more often than almost any other, is their feet." So says Dr. Nathan Wei, Clinical Director of The Arthritis and Osteoporosis Center of Maryland. "This is too bad because there are many treatments that can be helpful," Dr. Wei adds.
The foot is made up of 26 bones and 39 muscles...
The foot and ankle are designed to bear weight. The multiple joints in the feet are capable of adjusting to almost any terrain and the padding in the feet are designed to absorb shock.. The ankle joint allows the foot to move up and down, side to side, and inward and outward (inversion and eversion).
Not All Foot Pain Comes From The Foot!
Careful examination of the low back, hip, and knee should be performed because pain from these areas may affect the foot and ankle. In particular, pinched nerves in the low back can cause foot pain and weakness.
Ankle sprains are common- 25,000 people sprain an ankle every day!
The goal of treatment is to relieve pain and prevent instability.
Treatment of an acute sprain consists of rest, ice compression and elevation ("RICE"). Exercises to help stabilize and strengthen the ankle should be started.
Arthritis of the ankle may cause recurrent pain and swelling.
Pain from arthritis typically is made worse by weight-bearing particularly on uneven ground. What this means is you should try to avoid excessive walking or running on uneven ground. Anti-inflammatory medication and proper foot support can do wonders.
Pain in the ball of the foot has many causes...
  • Foot strain occurs when a person "overdoes it." And the treatment is pretty straightforward. Rest.
  • Morton's neuroma (a benign nerve tumor usually located between the 3rd and 4th toes)
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome (pinched nerve in the ankle)
  • Arthritis.
Other common causes of foot pain include:
  • Stress fractures may occur after excessive walking.
  • Achilles tendonitis causes pain in the back of the heel. Treatment consists of anti-inflammatory medicines, rest, a heel lift, and gentle stretching.
  • Plantar fasciitis causes pain in the bottom of the heel. Treatment includes rest, anti-inflammatory medication, heel cup, orthotics, stretching, and local steroid injection.
  • Flat foot.
Muscle strengthening exercises and orthotics are helpful.
Two other common problems are:
  • Osteoarthritis, particularly common in the big toe. The big toe will point out to the side. When bursitis alongside the great toe joint develops, this condition is referred to as a bunion. Treatment involves proper padding and footwear. In extreme cases, surgery is required.
  • Neuropathy. This painful condition is particularly common in diabetics. This occurs when the small nerves in the feet are damaged. Symptoms include burning, tingling, and pain in the feet - worse at night.
Well fitted orthotics (arch supports) can alleviate not only foot and ankle pain but pain in the knees, hips, low back, and neck!!
We often take the ability to walk for granted. This ability involves the use of two engineering marvels- our feet and ankles. Because of the tremendous amount of force transmitted to the feet with walking, unique problems may develop. Attention to proper preventative care, i.e., comfortable shoes, sox, hygiene, support, along with proper prompt medical care can really put the brakes on foot pain.

Weight Loss Benefits of Massage

There is no question that having a massage makes you feel great. Even having a deep-tissue, sports massage makes you feel wonderful afterwards. Massage can relieve stress, help you recover from hard physical activity or injury and even reduce anxiety, but can it help you to achieve your weight loss goals?
Research shows that massage can have a positive effect on your muscle-building capabilities and fitness levels, which in turn increases your capacity to control or loose weight.
Healthy strong muscles burn calories and give you the freedom to participate in all sorts of sports and activities that can help you burn excess calories and improve your overall fitness and wellbeing.
Massage has the following benefits that can directly influence your ability to control or loose weight:
1. Massage has been shown to improve circulation and the supply of nutrition to the muscles. Massage increases the interchange of vital substances between the blood and tissue cells, which increases tissue metabolism. After muscles are exercised, vital nutrients must be supplied to them so that they can recover and rebuild themselves. Massage maximizes the supply of these nutrients and oxygen though increased blood flow, which helps the muscles to grow and burn more calories as a result.
2. Massage improves your muscles' range of motion and their flexibility. This allows them to maintain maximum power and performance while active, and burn the maximum number of calories in the process.
Improved range of motion and flexibility also reduces muscle soreness during periods of recovery and muscle repair.
Having a wide range of motion and maximum muscle flexibility also reduces the danger of experiencing injuries during exercise which can severely limit activity, exercise and weight loss progress.
3. Massage helps to shorten the recovery time needed between your workouts. Waste products such as lactic and carbonic acid build up in muscles during and after exercise. Increased circulation to these muscles helps to eliminate toxic debris buildup caused by these waste products and in doing so shorten recovery time.
Shortened recovery time means you can safely have more workouts over a given period of time, which in turn means that you have the opportunity to burn more total calories in your effort to achieve your individual weight loss goals.
4. Massage can also help reduce the chance of you over-training. Massage has a relaxing effect on the muscles and a sedative effect on the nervous system. By helping you to rest, which is a very important element of any exercise program, massage can reduce the likelihood of you experiencing over-training syndrome, which is known to limit your ability to build strong healthy muscles and therefore loose weight with maximum efficiency.
5. In addition to all of the above, massage may directly aid in fat loss. According to some research studies, massage is thought to be able to burst the fat capsule in subcutaneous tissue so that the fat exudes and becomes absorbed. In this way, combined with proper nutrition and exercise, massage may actually help in weight loss.
6. As we have already touched upon, massage helps prevent and heal injuries. By stretching connective tissue, massage improves circulation to help prevent or break down adhesions and scar tissue that result from muscle tears and other common muscle injuries. Massage also influences the excretion of certain fluids (nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur) that aid in tissue repair. Fast and effective recovery from injuries means that you can begin exercising sooner after suffering an injury and getting your weight loss progress back on track.
So there you have it. Massage has a lot of benefits that can indirectly and possibly even directly aid you in achieving your weight loss goals.
Regular massage is just as important a component as regular workouts and correct nutrition in any comprehensive fitness and weight loss program, which is great news for those of us who thought that exercising and losing weight was all hard work! Remember, weight loss is all about leading a balanced lifestyle and massage is an essential part of any balanced lifestyle.
If you haven't had a massage lately, what are you waiting for? Get on the phone and make yourself a booking. If you haven't had a massage before, just remember to have your massage done by a qualified massage therapist.
If you are unsure about a massage practitioners qualifications and experience, ask for referrals, professional training information, and make sure they are certified by reputable agency or institution.
And remember, have fun!

Pain in the Butt. How to Deal with Hemorrhoids?

This is very sensitive area of your body. Too private. Nobody likes when something is wrong over there. However it happens.
Hemorrhoids occur practically in everyone. Though hemorrhoids cause problems in 1 out of 25 people. Mostly those are people between 45 and 65 years of age.
You find a blood on toilet tissue. Bright red blood. Ok, now what? You do not know why you bleed. It could be rectal cancer by the way. It could be hemorrhoids.
So? What are the hemorrhoids?
They look like cushions. They contain blood vessels, some muscle and elastic fibers. People often call them piles.
Not everything over there is a hemorrhoid. There could be other problems. Fissure, abscess, fistula, pruritus (itching), condylomata (sort of hanging skin caused by viral infection), viral and bacterial skin infections can happen in that, so sensitive area.
It is worth to talk to your doctor.
How would a scenario of hemorrhoids look?
A 46-year-old female presents with complaints on rectal discomfort, occasional bright red blood on toilet tissue and prolapsing tissue in of anal area. This is probably internal hemorrhoid.
Another scenario brings a patient who complains on severe rectal pain and prolapsed tissue.
The severe pain happens in external hemorrhoids. The pain follows thrombosis (thrombosis is the blood clot in your blood vessels).
There are four degrees of internal hemorrhoids.
It may be interesting for you to know because first, second and sometime third degree can be treated by banding only. Fourth degree and sometime third degree requires surgery.
Do not forget non-hemorrhoid causes of symptoms.
To check with your doctor is worthwhile because there could be other problems, including cancer or anal fissure. (By the way for anal fissure medical treatment alone may heal it in 90% of cases).
How are hemorrhoids treated?
Well first you need to understand how do hemorrhoids happen. Several reasons lead to hemorrhoids:
Constipation and extra straining
Chronic Diarrhea and loose stools
Long sitting or standing
Weight lifting
Obesity
Pregnancy and childbirth
Inherited tendency to hemorrhoids.
So, avoid all this and you are free.
Obviously this list of reasons is too wide.
The list of measures is wide too.
Increase the fiber in your diet.
Eat more cereals, fruits, vegetables, grains, etc
Psyllium and methylcellulose are supplemental types of fiber.
Exercise, avoid long standing or sitting, don't strain, keep the anal area clean.
Increase liquids in your diet.
Use stool softeners, stool-bulking agents (not a tasty ones, but what can you do).
Treat diarrhea with anti-motility drugs and fiber.
Not every of these methods are proved scientifically. Nonetheless they are included in the standard recommendations for hemorrhoids treatment.
To treat itching or discomfort you may use suppositories, ointments, creams, and gels. You may find that all in your local pharmacy.
These products contain protectant and anesthetics (pain relievers). Local anesthetics numb the area and decrease burning and itching.
Remember that local anesthetics may cause allergy.
Analgesics (menthol, camphor) relieve pain and itching as well
Vasoconstrictors reduce swelling in the perianal area. Though they may have side effects. Better discuss with your doctor.
Protectants (kaolin, cocoa butter, lanolin, mineral oil, starch, zinc oxide or calamine, glycerin, etc) create a physical barrier to prevent contact of stool and the skin. This reduces irritation, itching, and burning.
Similarly, some agents - astringents - dry the skin. That helps to relieve burning, itching, and pain as well.
To kill or at least suppress bacteria and other organisms use antiseptics. Boric acid, phenol, resorcinol and many others can be used. Again better to discuss with your doctor or at least pharmacist. Many of these drugs are sold over-the-counter.
Corticosteroids. Corticosteroids decrease inflammation and relieve itching, but may cause skin damage. They should be used for few days only.
Sitz bath may also help in relieving the symptoms.
When those methods fail your doctor may perform one of the following:
Sclerotherapy (causes scarring of the hemorrhoid).
Rubber band ligation. The rubber band cut off blood supply and hemorrhoid heals with scarring.
Side effects of any of the treatment may be infection of fat and other tissues surrounding the anal canal, especially if patient has diabetes cancer, AIDS.
Another option - electrotherapy and infrared photocoagulation. Works the same way, cause scarring of the tissue.
Cryotherapy uses cold to cause inflammation and scarring. Practically the same, though more time consuming.
Let say your medical treatment fails. What do you do then?
Well, you go to surgeon and treat it surgically.
Operations are done in less than 10% of patients. Though it depends.
Surgical procedures include Dilation. It is when surgeon stretches your anal sphincter.
Ligation. Often a Doppler probe helps to measures blood flow and finds the individual artery.
The doctor ties off the artery.
Sphincterotomy. It is when sphincter is partially cut. Whole idea is to reduce the pressure.
Hemorrhoidectomy. Hemorrhoidectomy makes sense for patients with third- or fourth-degree hemorrhoids. The hemorrhoids are cut out.
Stapled hemorrhoidectomy. Stapler cuts off the ring of expanded hemorrhoidal tissue.
There are different considerations why to do this and not that type of treatment. And vice versa.
There are complications (pain, difficulty urinating, bleeding several days after surgery, scarring, infection, stool incontinence). Complications happen relatively rare, but they are still there.
Better talk to you surgeon.

Home Remedy for Kidney Stones - 10 Remedies to Treat Kidney Stones Naturally

You wince at the pain. You cry at the ache. You tremble at the torture. No, you are not pregnant (thank goodness guys!) but you are suffering from kidney stones. Did you know that women report kidney stone pain to be more torturous than childbirth? Can you say, "OUCH?" But you are suffering for NO reason!
And almost one in every 20 people will develop a kidney stone sometime in their life. And if the pain is not the worst part, you can actually be part of the millions who spend thousands of dollars on hospital visits, various treatments, harsh side-effect medication and surgery. And the best or worst news (depending if you have spent the thousands of dollars on kidney stone treatment or not), you can treat kidney stones naturally with a simple home remedy for kidney stones. In fact, the body can naturally pass your stones with no medication, no surgery and not using 2 months of your salary.
If you are a kidney stone sufferer, here are 10 remedies that could be the difference between misery and bliss. I hope your treatment starts in the next 2 minutes.
10 Remedies to Treat Kidney Stones Naturally
1. Water! Typically, kidney stones are caused by dehydration (not getting enough water). If you live in an area with hot, humid weather or where clean water is rare, your odds of getting kidney stones are tripled. Therefore, you must begin your natural treatment with drinking at least 10 tall glasses of water a day. A good tip is to compete against a friend or spouse. Who can drink the most water?
2. Distilled! If you live in a country with the option of distilled water, buy it! Distilled water is pure from any and everything including minerals that could aid in the formation of kidney stones. Distilled water is almost perfect for flushing your system and passing stones.
3. Citric Acid! Did you know that lemons are potent with citric acid? And citric acids and lemons have been known to dissolve hard materials, even stones. Add a lemon to your drinking water to spruce things up.
4. Play again! Get outside or in the gym and do a little exercise. There are thousands of reasons to exercise but besides feeling better about yourself, you can actually give your body a boast of overall health. And overall health includes flushing the kidneys.
5. Cranberry juice from concentrate! By drinking cranberry juice, you can maintain your urinary tract which will help prevent kidney stone formation.
6. Citrates! Citrates reduce the build up of uric acid and eliminate the build-up of calcium salts which cause the formation of kidney stones. To get an adequate amount of citrates, drink plenty of fruit and vegetable juices such as carrot, grape and orange juices.
7. Drink Soda! If you drink at least 10 glasses of water a day, then a daily soft drink could possibly prevent future kidney stones by dissolving the stones. A recent study proved this theory and a natural cure working in 2 hours will pass kidney stones in less than one day. Discover more at our website.
8. Sugar! High sugar intake is associated with increased risk of kidney stones. You can cut hundreds of calories and prevent future kidney stones by staying away from sugary drinks and foods.
9. Flush! No, not your toilet! But you need to flush your liver, kidney and gallbladder with a simple water-soluble fiber vegetable that has been labeled a miracle by my customers.
10. Believe! I know it sounds corny but you need to believe in yourself! We preach it to our kids but it is time you practice what you preach. If you are serous about treatment, start today!
What is your next move?
You might be thinking yourself, "These remedies seem too simple?" And they are but they are the beginning of an effective treatment because your miraculous body wants to heal itself. And these simple tips are the beginning of what your body needs.
I believe a wise sage said, "Prevention is always the best remedy." And he was right! If you know the pain associated with kidney stones, you will know that lifestyle changes need to take place immediately. And if you are serious about dissolving and flushing them.

Is Your Shoulder Frozen? What Causes The Frozen Shoulder Syndrome?

Is your shoulder frozen? Do you know what caused it? In many cases of frozen shoulder syndrome the problems seems to simply start out of the blue and the cause that made your shoulder frozen can't be identified.
This brief article gives an overview of some of the known causes of frozen shoulder and then discusses the facts about idiopathic frozen shoulder syndrome.
So - how did it happen? How did you end up with your shoulder frozen?
Recent injury is a common story in frozen shoulder cases.
Many cases of frozen shoulder seem to follow after an injury to the rotator cuff muscles or the shoulder joint. This injury can be major or may seem very minor at the time - only for frozen shoulder to develop later.
Problems in other nearby joints can trigger the frozen shoulder syndrome. Frozen shoulder can develop in association with arthritis in the collar bone joint or the neck.
Immobility can lead to frozen shoulder:
Conditions that lead to the limb being immobile have been shown to lead to frozen shoulder. These include stroke or CVA, immobilizing in a sling and serious brain or spinal injury.
Heart or lung problems can be linked to the cause of your shoulder pain. Heart disease or cardiac surgery have sometimes led to frozen shoulder - as have major lung problems like TB or tumour. Please don't panic if you are reading this - these are very, very rare.
Diabetes Mellitus is a common associated condition with frozen shoulder. Diabetics are much more likely to get frozen shoulder than the rest of the population - some studies show that diabetics end up with their shoulder frozen up to six times more often than non diabetic patients.
Other ailments that are sometimes associated with frozen shoulder syndrome are thyroid problems, high cholesterol and Parkinson's disease.
The above list gives the commonest known causes of a frozen shoulder but in truth it is better to say that these are associated conditions rather than true causes. No one yet fully understands the trigger in the body that leads to a frozen shoulder but the items on the list above seem to be closely linked to the problem.
Please keep in mind however, that the commonest frozen shoulder cases have none of these associated features and just simply seem to arise from nowhere - these are called idiopathic cases.
Idiopathic is a medical word that means cause unknown. This group of patients are by far the most common amongst those suffering with the frozen shoulder syndrome.
I think it's also true that many of those, who remember a trigger incident or injury to the shoulder, can only do so with the benefit of hindsight. Some research doctor's believe that the problem was already brewing up in many of these people. They think that the minor injury was actually unrelated to the cause of the problem and only served to unmask the frozen shoulder by drawing the sufferer's attention to the shoulder joint.
It might even be true that a joint already beginning to struggle with frozen shoulder changes is more likely to suffer a minor injury than a normal joint. So ... which came first - the chicken or the egg?
The facts about idiopathic frozen shoulder!
Here's what research has shown us about the idiopathic variety of frozen shoulder:
Frozen shoulder happens mostly to people aged in their 50's, 60's and 70's
Women get their shoulder frozen much more commonly than men (in my patients it's about four women to one man)
There's no obvious connection between frozen shoulder and right or left-handedness
Frozen shoulder syndrome can sometimes affect both shoulders at once - or one after the other
It's a little difficult to get an idea of how common frozen shoulder truly is. The research studies that have tried to answer this question have not been very successful. Part of this relates to the fact that not all family doctors are skilled at making the diagnosis. If you have frozen shoulder then you may already have experienced this in your own case.

Know more about your lovely Lemon and Start your day with Lemon Water

A well-written article by: Dr. Robert O. Young

Many of us already know the benefits of drinking plenty of water and proper hydration, but with the simple addition of fresh lemon juice you may have yourself a very healing beverage.
I recommend that many of my patients begin each day...first thing in the morning...before any other food or drink with a glass of lemon water. Why lemon wate
r you may ask?

The benefits are remarkable:
•After a nights sleep the lemon water provides an ideal flush to the body's systems...digestive, circulatory and elimination.
•The lemon juice in particular is a great cleanser and purifier of blood, liver and kidney's.
•Lemon juice (although acidic in nature) is anionic and therefore produces an alkalizing effect on the body. This is important because the more alkaline your body is, the healthier it is. Disease states only occur when the body pH is acidic. Being alkaline also helps further the detoxification processes.
•Lemon juice is a great source of Vitamin C: supports immune function. Calcium, Phosphorus, Iron and B-vitamins are also in lemon juice
•Lemon juice supports digestive function and can relieve conditions such as heartburn, indigestion, flatulence diarrhea and constipation.
By simply drinking a glass or warm or hot lemon water you can shift your body in to a better state of health and in the end...prevent many future illnesses. And isn't that what medicine should really be about prevention?
Lime and lemon add refreshing zest to almost any drink which cleanse and enhance immune properties of your already healthy glass of juice.

Make it a habit to put in cut limes/lemons (together with peel) into your drinking water or juices, to enjoy all its medicinal properties. With lemon juice in your drink, the absorbability of the other nutrients in your drink is increased up to five times!

Tip: Juice a glass of either lime or lemon juice and make ice cubes out of it. When you have a drink, pop a few lime/lemon cubes into your drink for a refreshing taste while enjoying its immense health benefits.
Limes and lemons can be stored in the fridge for up to two weeks. Although they can actually keep longer, it will soon lose its flavor after too long.
When buying lemons, look at the stem end of the lemon. There should be about four or five little lines radiating out of the stem. The greater the number of these lines, the higher the mineral content of the lemon.
Caution:
Despite all the goodness that limes/lemons provide as mentioned above, remember always to take only in moderation. More is not always better.
Some people are allergic to citrus peels, so when you take lime/lemon juice extracted together with the peel, check yourself to see if there is any allergic reaction afterwards.

Natural Home Remedies for Brown Spots – Get Age Spots Free Skin

Age spots mostly appear in areas consistently exposed to sunlight (the face and backs of hands, for example), although they also are occasionally found on less exposed areas. Ultraviolet (UV) light accelerates the production of melanin. Melanin is the dark pigment in the epidermis that gives your skin its normal color. The extra melanin is produced to protect the deeper layers of your skin—creates the darker color of a tan.
Age spots are harmless. Age spots range from freckle-size to more than a centimeter across and can group together, making them more prominent. Often, age spots are accompanied by other signs of sun damage. Symptom is a skin lesion that is a painless, flat patch or macule (area of skin color change). Liver spots are the result of a "ceroid" pigment build up in the skin of older people. These latter spots are the outward signs of free radical destruction within the body. There is pre-oxidation of fats—in the cells instead of in the liver. Free radical damage produces waste materials in cells throughout the body, including the brain and liver. Liver spots do not become cancerous.

What causes age spots?
When you are exposed more to the sun your skin produces cells called melanocytes. These cells produce a dark brown pigment called melanin, because of which your skin turns darker. When you are overexposed to sunlight, the melanocytes will be produced in a higher extent. This causes in the appearance of brown, black or gray spots on your skin, which are popular as age spots. These age spots appear on every body area exposed to the skin, and they are more on your face as it is more exposed to sun than any other part.

Home Remedies to Treat Brown Spots:
Keep in mind that these brown spots, thought to be caused by sun damage or a nutrition deficiency, took years to form. A variation of this remedy is to rub on castor oil and take the vitamin E orally.
Lemon juice is a tried and tested remedy for treating freckles. Apply lemon juice with your fingers on the affected area; lemon juice bleaches the dark spots.
To remove freckles. Blanch and grind two almonds, mix it with white of an egg and half teaspoon of lime juice. Spread the mixture on the face and leave it on till the skin feels dry. Then, wash off first with warm water and then with cold water.
Another home remedy for facial brown spots is to make a paste of different plants cobinations and apply it to your face. Grind about 100 grams of dried basil leaf, neem leaf (from the tree the Indians call "Nature's Drugstore) and mint; add some turmeric powder. Put in enough rose water to make a paste. Apply this to the age spots on the face. Also , a paste of saffron and honey can also help remove dark spots.
Buttermilk Dab buttermilk on the spots. The lactic acid and other ingredients in the milk are beneficial to the skin. Buttermilk has been used for generations as a skin cleanser and as a beauty aid.

Every year on November 14, the International Diabetes Federation celebrates World Diabetes Day. In 2007, this day became an official United Nations Day with the passage of United Nation Resolution 61/225. The goal of the campaign is to draw attention to diabetes and how important it is for the average person to have a reasonable knowledge of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. During the next five years, the event coordinators plan on emphasizing diabetes education as well as prevention programs.
The International Diabetes Federation is composed of 212 member associations in more than 160 countries and territories. All of them are member states of the United Nations. November 14 is observed because it honors the birthday of Frederick Banting who is known as one of the discoverers of insulin. He actually thought up the original idea which led to the discovery of insulin way back in 1922.
Experts have estimated the number of people with diabetes world-wide has reached around 285 million and because diabetics need to deliver 95% of their own care, learning how to stabilize their insulin and blood sugar levels, ongoing education is necessary.
The International Diabetes Federation estimates that over 344 million people throughout the world are at risk for type 2 diabetes.
The risks for developing type 2 diabetes include:
  • obesity and carrying excess abdominal weight
  • insufficient exercise
  • unhealthy eating habits
  • increased age
  • high blood pressure
  • elevated cholesterol levels
  • a family history of diabetes
  • diabetes during pregnancy (gestational diabetes)
  • ethnic background including Asian, Hispanic, Indigenous people (Australia, US and Canada) and African American

Do you know the warning signs of diabetes? They include:

  • fatigue and weakness
  • blurred vision
  • frequent infection
  • slow-healing wounds
  • tingling sensation in your hands and feet
  • fuzzy head and lack of ability to concentrate
Do you or someone you love have any of these warning signs of type 1 or type 2 diabetes? If so, do not hesitate to make an appointment to see your healthy care provider so a diagnosis can be made and treatment started. Type 2 diabetes is a condition of lifestyle... following a healthy eating plan and increasing physical activity to thirty minutes a day at least five times a week will help to lower blood sugar levels. As the number of people being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes has increased considerably over the past ten years, it pays to be aware how lifestyle affects this condition. Learning about type 2 could help you or someone you love in the near future

Some Answers To Colon Cancer Questions

1. What is colon cancer?
Cancer is a disease which can affect cells from all organs. The colon cancer affects the cells of the colon, determining them to proliferate in an uncontrollable way. This mass of abnormal cells will form a tumor inside the colon. The cancer of the intestine is quite frequent and two thirds of this type of cancer is situated in the colon.
2. Who can develop colon cancer?
You are at risk of developing colon cancer if you drink a lot of alcohol and you are obese. Also if other members of your family had colon cancer or breast cancer you could inherit some genes that make you more sensible to cancer. If you have polyps on your intestine and you leave them untreated for a long time, they can transform into malign polyps, meaning that cancer had occurred.
3. Is my diet involved in cancer development?
Following a diet which is rich in fats and proteins could expose you to cancer. If you eat a lot of fruit, vegetables and high fiber foods you can prevent colon cancer from occurring.
4. Does colon cancer come with any symptoms?
There are some symptoms which could announce that cancer is installing, but they also appear in other diseases. Some of the symptoms are: seeing blood in your bowels, alternation of diarrhea with constipation, and low abdominal pains.
5. How does the doctor know that I have cancer?
The doctor will perform a sigmoidoscopy or a colonoscopy to examine the insides of the colon. Also x-rays of the colon will be performed. These methods will see if tumors are present inside the colon. In order to stage colon cancer CT and ultrasound will be used.
Some Answers To Colon Cancer Questions6. Can colon cancer be treated?
Generally the most indicated procedure in trying to treat colon cancer is surgery. By surgery the doctors will remove the tumor from the colon. If the cancer spread, giving metastasis, the doctors will recommend you chemotherapy and radiotherapy. These are hard bearable due to their side effects like nausea, vomiting, loss of hair, fever, and tiredness.
7. Is the treatment effective or not?
If the colon cancer was diagnosed in its early stages and it has not spread to other organs the treatment will be 90% effective and patients will survive even five years after. If the cancer has given metastasis the treatment will not be so effective any more and half of the diagnosed patients will live less that five years.

Hypothyroid Diet

Hypothyroidism (under-active thyroid) can remain undetected for years. People commonly have the symptoms of hypothyroidism even though their blood tests indicate that their thyroid function is 'normal'. This is because standard pathology tests for thyroid function can have difficulty detecting 'sub clinical' cases of hypothyroidism. The most common symptoms of hypothyroidism are chronic tiredness, constipation, feeling the cold and dry skin. If you are in a high risk category for thyroid dysfunction - have a family member with a thyroid condition (especially your mother); are at the menopausal age; have experienced lots of stress in the past two-three years; or have hormonal imbalances - then it's important that you support your thyroid, even if the tests tell that your thyroid is 'normal'. One of the best ways to support thyroid function is with diet.
Certain foods improve hypothyroidism by supplying the essential minerals that the thyroid needs to function and produce hormones.
These include:
1. Tyrosine-rich foods. The amino acid tyrosine combines with iodine to make the hormone thyroxine. These foods include meat, fish, turkey and chicken breast, low fat milk and yogurt, almonds, avocado, bananas, lima beans, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, lentils. Supplements of tyrosine should be taken on an empty stomach so that it doesn't have to compete with other amino acids.
2. Iodine-rich foods. Iodine is needed to make thyroid hormones. Ideal food sources include Celtic sea salt, seaweed (sushi, nori rolls), salt water fish and sea food. Iodized salt is available but should be used in small amounts once or twice a week along with a good quality Celtic sea salt. Iodine supplements are usually in the form of kelp tablets. Consult your health practitioner before using these, because the wrong dose can unbalance your thyroid.
3. High quality protein. All of our body's glands and hormones are made from protein. Try to eat high quality lean protein at every meal.
4. Selenium-rich foods - meat, chicken, salmon, tuna, seafood, whole unrefined grains, brazil nuts, brewer's yeast, broccoli, dairy products, garlic, onions and black strap molasses.
5. Supplements of Vitamin B complex and essential fatty acids because they help to balance the entire hormonal system.
6. Sunlight - while not a food, its important to get a daily dose of safe sun. Light stimulates the pineal gland, which in turn positively affects the thyroid as well as all the other endocrine glands.
Certain foods are detrimental for hypothyroidism because they can inhibit the production of thyroid hormones.
1. Soy products. Isoflavones are hormone-like substances found in soy products. High consumption of soy products have been found to suppress thyroid function in some people and can even cause or worsen hypothyroidism. In particular, an isoflavone called genistein, appears to reduce thyroid hormone output by blocking the activity of an enzyme called thyroid peroxidase. This enzyme is responsible for adding iodine onto the thyroid hormones.
How much is too much soy? Each person can tolerate a different amount and unfortunately soy is hidden in many processed and refined foods. If you have a family history of thyroid disease or a diet low in the minerals iodine and selenium, you need to be careful of your soy intake. Reduce your consumption of soy products (soy milk, tofu, tempeh, miso, soy sauce) to a maximum of two or three times per week. If you have already been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, or you display the common symptoms, then reduce your intake to less than twice in a week.
2. Cruciferous vegetables - broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, mustard, rutabagas, kohlrabi, and turnips. Isothiocyanates are the category of substances in cruciferous vegetables that have been associated with decreased thyroid function. They appear to reduce thyroid function by blocking thyroid peroxidase, and also by disrupting messages that are sent across the membranes of thyroid cells. Cooking these vegetables does make the isothiocyanates less available. Also, because they are so good for us in other ways, only restrict this group if you have been actually diagnosed with hypothyroidism or have strong symptoms.
Hypothyroid Diet3. Low progesterone goes hand in hand with low thyroid, so avoid foods that promote oestrogen dominance. This includes any animal product that has not been produced organically (chicken, eggs, dairy, beef, lamb, pork, etc.). All of these foods are available organic.
4. It is believed by some researchers that chlorine and fluoride (found in most tap water) block iodine receptors in the thyroid gland, eventually leading to hypothyroidism.
5. Gluten is linked to thyroid dysfunction (both hyper and hypo thyroid) so if you have any digestive problems or any one in your family with a gluten sensitivity, it would be worth dramatically reducing your gluten intake.
